Lodge Group offers Occupational Therapy in-house!

June 10, 2016

At Lodge Group Care we go above and beyond the standards when caring for our service users. That’s why we’ve decided to offer in-house occupational therapy. It’s available in three key areas of our care services:

What is Occupational Therapy?

It is an applied science and health profession that provides skilled treatment to help individuals achieve and maintain independence in all facets of their lives. OT gives people the “skills for the job of living” necessary for independent and satisfying lives.

The World Federation of Occupational Therapists provides the following definition of Occupational Therapy: “Occupational therapy is as a profession concerned with promoting health and well being through occupation. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life. Occupational therapists achieve this outcome by enabling people to do things that will enhance their ability to participate or by modifying the environment to better support participation.”

Occupational Therapy (OT) is offered to those with a physical, mental, or cognitive disorders. Therapists carry out practical activities with individuals to assist them in living independently and have a sense of identity. This could be essential day-to-day tasks such as self-care, work or leisure.

Why is it beneficial for Lodge Group to have an in-house occupational therapist?

  • Our in-house occupational therapist participates in the training of new staff members in our Specialist Autism services and Domiciliary services. Our training is tailored to our service users’ needs in the different services.
  • Our OT department works weekly with staff to develop their care practice in interacting and developing life skills and social skills with our service users
  • The occupational therapists work with all our managers, making sure independence and provision of choices are the way of working with our service users.

How do our occupational therapists work?

The Lodge Group Care occupational therapists centre much of their work around identifying and eliminating environmental barriers to independence and participation in daily activities. After an assessment with an individual, treatment is put in place that focuses on developing, recovering or maintaining their daily living and work skills.

We work with the Canadian Model of ‘Occupational Performance’ where all our services users are assessed from a holistic point of view. Care plans are drafted in a way that take into account all of the Canadian Model’s points along with the objective of supporting our service users to live their lives to their full potential.
